Seriously, how long has this island been in the game, and does it have a purpose?

Yeah, this is the broodlord questline island from Vanilla WoW. This was actually a very fun segment of the quest line. In the questline, the only way to get there was to get a buff from the underwater naga that are nearby. They would give you a 300% swimspeed buff so that you could make it accross without dieing.
Pffft. Death Knights don't need underwater nagas to make it without dying. :p

haha you would be suprised w/ all the random islands, underwater cities, able to fly under maps, Going to places in azeroth that have no names. Its pretty fun exploring things like that.
pre 2.3 i was a master of all the Unknown zones in azeroth!
i once dropped a friend's toon in hyjal and deleted hearth stone. good times.
